Bogor's 549th anniversary

Bogor Regency has a very long history and is closely tied to the Sunda or Pajajaran Kingdom. In the past, Bogor was known as the center of Pajajaran’s government, with its palace located in Pakuan, an area that is now part of Bogor City. Because of this, Bogor is often referred to as the homeland of the great Sunda kingdom.

Pajajaran reached its peak during the reign of King Prabu Siliwangi in the 15th century. The kingdom was known for its prosperity, with people living from farming and trade. Bogor’s strategic location in the mountains made the land fertile and safe, making it the perfect place to serve as the kingdom’s capital.

After Pajajaran fell due to the spread of Islam from the northern coast, Bogor remained an important region. Many historical relics can still be found today, such as the Batu Tulis inscription in Bogor City. This inscription is solid proof of the existence of the Sunda Kingdom in the past.

During the Dutch colonial era, Bogor also played an important role. It was here that the Governor-General of the Dutch built the Bogor Palace, which still stands today. From Bogor, the Dutch were able to control trade routes and plantations in West Java, especially since the area’s fertile land was turned into tea and coffee plantations.

After Indonesia gained independence, Bogor Regency grew rapidly into one of the busiest regions in West Java. Its location near Jakarta made Bogor a supporting area for the capital city, while still preserving its Sundanese history and local culture. Today, Bogor is famously known as the “City of Rain” as well as the home of important historical heritage for the Indonesian nation.
