WEST JAVA 80th ANIVERSARY

West Java 80th Anniversary

West Java has a long history that stretches back to prehistoric times. Its fertile land has made it a place where humans have settled for thousands of years. Evidence of ancient life such as menhirs, stone tools, and inscriptions can still be found in various regions.

In the 4th century, the Kingdom of Tarumanegara was established, making it one of the oldest kingdoms in the Indonesian archipelago. Later, the Sunda or Pajajaran Kingdom rose to power under its famous ruler, King Prabu Siliwangi. Pajajaran was known for its prosperity and strong trade relations with foreign lands.

The 16th century marked a turning point when Islam began to spread through Cirebon and Banten. As a result, Pajajaran weakened and eventually collapsed. Sunan Gunung Jati played an important role in spreading Islam across the region.

During the Dutch and Japanese colonial periods, the people of West Java endured great hardship. Fertile lands were turned into plantations, and locals were forced into hard labor. Despite this, resistance continued to emerge, including from figures such as KH Zainal Mustofa who fought against the Japanese.

After Indonesia gained independence, West Java was shaken by the DI/TII rebellion led by Kartosuwiryo. Today, West Java has grown rapidly into the most populous province in Indonesia and remains the heart of Sundanese culture, rich in tradition and heritage.
