National Sports Day (HAORNAS) is celebrated every September 9th in Indonesia. This date is inseparable from the nation's significant sporting history, namely the holding of the first National Sports Week (PON).
1. Background :
After Indonesia's independence in 1945, the spirit of nation-building was also expressed through sports. The government wanted to unite all regions through sporting events, so in 1948 the 1st PON was held in Solo, Central Java.
2. PON I (1948) :
This first PON took place from September 9–12, 1948. Although Indonesia had just gained independence and was still facing various difficulties, the enthusiasm of the athletes and the public was immense. This event became a symbol of unity and proof that Indonesia was capable of standing on par with other countries in the field of sports.
3. Establishment of HAORNAS:
To commemorate this historic moment, the government, through a Presidential Decree, designated September 9 as National Sports Day. This commemoration was first held on September 9, 1985, in Jakarta, led directly by President Soeharto.
4. The Meaning of HAORNAS:
To remind the public of the importance of sports in everyday life.
To foster a spirit of sportsmanship, togetherness, and national unity.
To encourage the emergence of high-achieving athletes who bring honor to Indonesia on the world stage.
Conclusion :
National Sports Day was born from the spirit of the nation's struggle through the PON I in 1948 in Solo. Since then, every September 9th is commemorated to encourage all Indonesians to live healthily, exercise, and continue to achieve.
