National Heroes Day History

Every 10th of November, Indonesia commemorates National Heroes Day to honor the heroes who fought and sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence.

The origin of this day lies in the Battle of Surabaya (1945), one of the biggest and most historic battles in Indonesia’s struggle for freedom. The people of Surabaya bravely fought against the Allied forces who attempted to reoccupy Indonesia after its independence.

The battle was triggered by the death of Brigadier General A.W.S. Mallaby on October 30, 1945. Following this, the Allied troops issued an ultimatum demanding Indonesian forces to surrender. Instead, the people of Surabaya stood firm and chose to fight for their freedom.

The major battle began on November 10, 1945, lasting for weeks. Though many lives were lost, the courage of the Surabaya fighters became a symbol of Indonesia’s patriotic spirit.

Therefore, the Indonesian government declared November 10th as National Heroes Day to honor their bravery and sacrifices.
